What makes a healthy man?
Melbourne men over 40, who consider themselves to be in excellent health, are being asked to share their secrets with health researchers.
Researchers say the study focus on healthy men is a novel approach. “There is little information about men who remain in tip-top shape as they get older” says researcher Dr Carolyn Allan, Research Fellow at Prince Henry’s Institute.
The study involves 5 visits to Monash Medical Centre in Clayton and a number of checkups are offered including blood tests and bone health testing.
A key aspect for the researchers will be to look at the testosterone levels in healthy older men. “We know that levels of testosterone slowly decline in most men once they reach about 40 years of age. However, very little is known about testosterone levels in those older men who maintain very good physical health” says Dr Allan.
